4 out of 5 stars Informative and surprisingly funny   April 1, 2008

Saw this originally on TV and thought it was the best "travel" programme of the year, alongside Paul Merton's China series. Aside from providing interesting insights into countries and areas we dont hear much about, Gavin Stamp is also a hilariously grumpy and snobby travelling companion. His tantrum about having to use a bus, and therefore go to a bus station, was priceless. Recommended on a number of levels!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Travel Documentary   January 18, 2008

I watched this series on TV and loved it. The Orient Express itself is only shown in the first episode though this was in my opinion sufficient and it was very interesting to see a journey on the restored 1930s carriages. Gavin Stamp actually follows the original Orient Express route across eastern Europe (which the current Venice-Simplon Simplon Orient Express does not follow) so from Vienna onwards he uses various passenger trains. The series concentrates mainly on the architecture at the various places visited (with some insight into local history and culture as well) but this was very interesting. Gavin Stamp is a great presenter and gives sufficient information without boring the viewers. I thought this was a lot better than Michael Palin's New Europe (also about Eastern Europe) because with this you actually get to see the historical sites at the various places. Definitely recommended to anyone with even a slight interest in architecture or the history of Eastern Europe.
