Remarkably Entertaining - Not At All Diminished By Time August 26, 2008 Can it be that Hinge and Bracket are even funnier NOW than when first broadcast? I think so. Their humor has taken on a "multifacetedness" (gosh!) that was not present the first time I saw them televised in the 1970's and 1980's. I was actually heart-sick when the DVD ended and that has not happened for a very long time. American viewers might prefer to start with the George Logan interview that can be accessed in the Extras. It makes a lot of what Hinge and Bracket (Logan and Fyffe) are trying to achieve even more apparent. I am so very pleased that Hinge and Brackett are available on DVD again. Buy this DVD - you will not be sorry you did!
Lots of great content but not for everyone June 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have rated this five stars purely for the enjoyment of having more Hinge and Bracket material available, which it should be!
As for the content, it is not for eveyone. This is them at their musical best but if your looking for comedy, while there is some present, it is mostly operatic musical numbers.
Looking forward to seeing more of the truly excellent Hinge and Bracket and if you dont have their series one DVD you MUST, MUST, MUST get it, its hilarious in the extreme!
Very Dear Ladies May 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wish the BBC would re-run all of their shows. they always remind me of my two elderly aunts Bunty and Barbie, who also sang. Like two elderly cats who would spit at each other occasionally but were really good friends.
Brilliant February 21, 2008 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I defy anyone not to find something to smile about and the songs are in your head for days . I can't recommend this highly enough George Logan and Patrick Fyffe are brilliant it's just a shame that Patrick didn't live long enough to see all his hard work reach a new generation .They seem to enjoy themselves so much and even just watching it you want to join in with the singing , the extras are good too although some of the photos were duplicated from the Dear Ladies disc but thats just a small quibble . The 2 discs kept my family entertained for 4 nights so it's a bargain .
A grand piano,Lavender water and Two elderly song birds-It can only be the lovely Hinge & Bracket. February 8, 2008 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
Hinge and Bracket Gala EveningsThis is the second Hinge & Bracket DVD and it's entitled 'Gala Evenings' and is a Two DVD set.It is more than wonderful that this has been released,This is the elderly song birds Dr.Evadne Hinge and Dame Hilda Bracket at their very best, entertaining us with songs from an age that is sadly long gone now.( An age of beautiful songs, lovely dances and when people were much kinder to each other). All these Dear Ladies had was a stage, grand piano and a hell of a lot of talent. Hinge & Bracket could make you cry with laughter, or just cry with beautiful songs such as 'This Is My Lovely Day' or 'I Can Give You The Starlight'.We smile with Hilda's rendition of Gertie Millar's song 'Moonstruck'(I'm Such A Silly When The Moon Comes Out'.)And we all join in with the 'South Pacific' melody, dance so lightly to the 'Tiddly Poms' and listen in sheer delight to Hilda singing Joyce Grenfell's 'I'm Going To See You Today' as beautiful as Joyce sung it herself. What makes these DVD's so lovely for me is i went to countless live shows.Their last show George Logan & Patrick Fyffe (as Hinge & Bracket) sang the song 'Pals' (As Pals We Meet Again) to me at the start of the show.I've often been invited back stage by George Logan,he is a very sincere lovely man.Lovely to see Joesph Cooper (of 'Face the Music' fame) introduce the first Gala concert on Disc One.George Logan & Patrick Fyffe,as Hinge & Bracket really looked like two elderly ladies.Everyone knew someone just like them, you could almost smell the face powder and Lavender water and knew you were going to be offered a barley sugar sweet from their hand bag.Apparently on Patrick Fyffe's memorial stone it reads 'Do not stand at my grave and weep i did not die...'.Joyce Grenfell believed she would always be with us and this is the same for Patrick,he is in all the lovely songs he sang and still making us laugh with all these wonderful DVD's.He once said to me Joyce was still doing all her greats works.Acorn media.. please bring out Series 2 of 'DEAR LADIES' very soon.
