One of 2008's best films October 7, 2008
I don't know how this wonderful movie sneaked past me at the cinema, but I'm so glad I got the dvd. Beautifully shot in black and white, this is to Los Angeles what Woody Allen's Manhattan was to New York. Filled with more humour and pathos than a dozen other mainstream romcoms, the script/dialogue is fantastic, and the two leads certainly do it justice. With the majority of the film spent following these two on their date as they walk about in LA, I was reminded of the films Before Sunrise/Sunset, but swapping the parisian setting for LA. My only complaint of the dvd is the rather average extras. There is a 5 minute (wow!) "making-of", deleted scenes and trailer. The biggest saving grace though is an audio commentary. This is with about 5 different people, but importantly includes the writer/director and the two lead stars. The extras aside though, this film is still definitely worth your attention and is so much better than most typical Hollywood romcoms. Hugely enjoyable, offbeat, funny, and poignant...just a great movie.

Just seen this at the Duke of York's Cinema in Brighton. This film is worth it for the shots of (for me) an unseen and unknown (black and white) Art-Deco Los Angeles. Great characters, incredible humour and pathos all make for a beautiful and stunning film. It does not really get much better than this in terms of direction and dialogue.
