Amazon.co.uk Review
One Tree Hill: Season 1 marks the beginning of a genuinely engrossing series that maintains, for a long while, an unusual focus on a single, powerful conflict defining the destinies of two characters. Adolescent half-brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty) Scott have lived parallel lives in One Tree, North Carolina. They share a common father, Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), who has disregarded the existence of Lucas, his son by a one-time flame, Karen (Moira Kelly), whom he dumped years before to accept a basketball scholarship to college. While neglecting Lucas, Dan--whose hoop dreams never materialized--has spent his time almost perversely micro-managing every one of Nathan's moves on and off the court at his old high school, where the lad is currently an arrogant superstar under gruff-but-wise coach Whitey Durham (Barry Corbin). Nathan (whose mother is separated from Dan) is a child of privilege and has been raised to disregard teamwork, compromise, or the feelings of others. He regards Lucas, a basketball sensation on neighborhood playgrounds, as trash, and his own girlfriend, Peyton (Hilarie Burton), as a pretty bauble he can abuse and dismiss at will. Still, he's sympathetic; one can see glimpses of the human being struggling to emerge from under Dan's control.

Meanwhile, Lucas helps Karen run her cafe, hangs out with platonic best friend Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz), and pines for Peyton (herself a punky misfit at heart). He also turns to surrogate dad Keith Scott (Craig Sheffer)--actually his uncle and Dan's older brother--for support, and sees himself as a perpetual and doomed outsider in One Tree. All that changes when Whitey invites Lucas to join the b-ball team that Nathan dominates, a move that challenges the status quo of multiple relationships in a small community. For about a third of its episodes, this series from creator Mark Schwahn (who wrote the hit film Coach Carter) stays true to the suspense surrounding Lucas's and Nathan's changes in fortune. Then a bit of padding follows to the end of the season; there are 22 episodes to fill out, after all. But even as various distractions (a kidnapping subplot, a car accident and coma for a major character) and random events creep in (Dan, rather incredibly, takes over the team from Whitey at one point, thus coaching both his sons), One Tree Hill remains highly watchable. The writing is shaped well and organic, while performances are consistently excellent. (It's especially good to see Sheffer, perhaps best known for A River Runs Through It, again.) --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars ONE TRUE HELL OF A SHOW !!   October 25, 2008
Who could not love One Tree Hill. We only starting watching it this year and we are absolutely hooked on it. We have Series 1,2,3, and just bought Series 4, half way through it and still the show is as great as ever. I cannot wait to see Series 5. One Tree Hill is blessed with great actors, great story lines, excellent music, and some really important issues raised in each series. I never really got into the OC...I think One Tree Hill is universal, and has more realistic people in it.

Nathan is a hottie... Pouting Sexy Chad is a younger Brad, the girls are all beautiful, Brooke is stunningly beautiful and her bitchy lines are classics, Payton also beautiful..poor Payton she goes through alot but dont worry Payton at least your hair always looks great during the bad times!!! Beautiful Hayley, who reminds me of Shakira all the time is a great actress. Karen and Deb great too. Dan is brilliantly bad, we love him!! Mouth, Rachel, Skills, alot of great characters. We love Coach Whitey, and that accent is so strong, his emotional speech when accepting his lifetime achievement will have you in tears!! We miss you Keith!!!!

Each series has so many funny moments but alot of very sad, powerful emotional ones too, that will have you very tearful.

Buy all the series you WILL LOVE THEM!!!

WELL DONE TO ALL THE ACTORS, AND EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH THE SHOW. WE LOVE IT !!!

p.s. Note to the writers.... Please could Nathan and Lucas take their tops off more often ? just so anyone who is considering basketball can see how great the sport is and how it keeps you fit.........ok I am lying...JUST DO IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars There's Only One Tree Hill.   April 30, 2008

I got this as a christmas gift after many hints that I wanted to see it. Whilst this season is my least favourite of the four that I have seen at the time that I'm writing this, it is still amazing. In this season they focussed a lot on basketball, sometimes a little too much for my liking but other than that it was amazing. Favourite characters in this season are definately Lucas, Brooke and Karen and for some reason I don't like Peyton in this season as much as later ones although I'm sure in rewatching it I would like her. The villain as it is through most of this season as well as others is Dan and Paul Johannson plays him so very well.

I'd say that this is definately a must have. I myself had NEVER seen the show on TV and now I can't imagine not having the DVDs.

I watched all of seasons 2,3 and 4 when it was on TV but missed alot of season 1. im glad i decided to buy season 1, it filled in a lot of gaps as you can imagine! the only bad thing about the box set is that it is highly addictive and i watched all the episodes in a very short space of time. also, watch out for the need to talk about it afterwards!

At first i wasn't really interested in watching the series but when i did i was glued to the tv and couldn't move, season 1 is full of great storylines and really does represent what teenegers go through in this day and age. so watch and enjoy it and if you like The O.C then you will love this.

I watched my first One Tree Hill episode completely by accident when i was off uni with the flu. It brightened my day no end and i have been obsessed ever since. It's not as cringeworthy as Dawson's Creek and not as false as The OC. The five main characters are all so likeable, even bad bot Nate while the adults also provide grat storylines and more diversity. Some of the best humour comes from the parents and Coach 'Whitey' Durham. A legend in the making.

Series one is all about developing relationships and how they are all interlinked. My favourite is the Haley/Nathan scenario as it was so unexpected My favourite character has to be Brooke though as initially she was the good time girl but throughout the series you get see more of her as she develops. Comparisons could be made to Summer (The OC) but this would be unfair to Sophia Bush as she has made Brooke an instantly loveable charcter and has a wicked sense of humour. One of my favourite episodes has to be the away game where all the girls end up in the car together while Brooke is high and Nate and Lucas end up being forced to work together to escape their rivals. Hilarious!!!

I find myself identifying with every character and find it a far more intelligent teen drama when compared to it's peers.
