Surprisingly good October 22, 2003

As a professional historian I generally have a strong dislike for military historians. They often become obsessed with the measurement of the shells and the technical aspects of the firepower of the guns to such an extent that they almost seem to be glorifying their usage. They frequently forget the real suffering inflicted by these weapons. Such a charge cannot be levelled against Richard Holmes. He is constantly aware of the suffering of those on the receiving end of these weapons. His presentation is perceptive and straightforward without being patronising. His approach offers a different vision of the subject of the First World War without invalidating that offered by such videos as 'The Great War' or '1914-18 Total War/The Crucible'. Of course criticisms can be made. His approach is unashamedly written from an Allied perspective and it would be interesting to see what the Germans made of these situations. Also he doesn't always take in the wider aspects of the Western Front such as the links between the front line soldiers and the civilians in the rear. But this latter element is dealt with by other videos. So overall this is a very worthwhile contribution to the material on the First World War.

As a fairly new WW1 enthusiast I have read and seen quite a lot of material recently. This has to be the best that I have come across. Richard Holmes is a knowledgable and fascinating presenter. All the key issues surrounding the Front are covered, in sufficient depth to help you understand but without getting bogged down in excessive military detail. As well as being immensely informative it is also very moving.

If you like History then you'll love this. An in depth into how our great grandfathers and grandfathers had to endure some of the most awful scenes ever...

This series was absolutely excellent on the BBC. Professor Richard Holmes knows his subject thoroughly and never talks down to the viewer. If you are FWW enthusiast then this video is a must !
