From the back cover... February 11, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Can it really have been as long ago as 1975 when those tears of laughter first started to course down the nation's faces? When people first took to raising their eyebrows and saying `Que?' to one another? That historic year saw the beginning of BBC-TV's unforgettable Fawlty Towers comedies -- even now, try mentioning Barcelona without someone sniggering. The catchphrases endure and the quality of the humour remains unsurpassed. This tape offers three of the best episodes from life at the hotel that doubles as an asylum.
1. COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS It's not a wise man that entrusts his furtive winnings on the horses to an absent-minded geriatric Major, but Basil was never known for that quality. Parting with those ill-gotten gains was Basil's first mistake; his second was to tangle with the intermittently deaf Mrs. Richards.
2. THE ANNIVERSARY Sybil cannot believe that Basil has forgotten their 15th wedding anniversary --- not after what happened last time he didn't remember. In fact, Basil has arranged a surprise party, with all of Sybil's friends on the Fawlty Towers invitation list. Unfortunately, Sybil flounces off to the golf course leaving Basil up to his neck floundering in guests, lies and mayhem.
3. BASIL THE RAT Manuel insists that his pet rodent is a Siberian hamster. Basil is convinced that the pet shop has conned the gullible Spaniard and sold him a rat -- a fine thing to have running round the hotel when the public health inspector is also on the loose.
BBC's Greatest Accomplishment October 27, 2002 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Fawlty Towers is second to none. Fawlty Towers/Monty Python is top of my list. John Cleese is the greatest comedian who ever lived. My personal favourites are 'Basil the Rat', 'The Germans' and 'Communication Problems' but the whole series was great. Cleese and Booth worked harder on Series 2, I think. A classic moment is in 'Gourmet Night' which sees Basil the Bastard whacking the car with a branch. Hilarious.
Brilliant! August 26, 2000 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This tape contains the three episodes Communication Problems (originally broadcast on 19/2 1979), The Anniversary (26/3 1979), and Basil The Rat (25/10 1979).All three episodes are among the best in the two Fawlty Towers series! The interesting thing is that Basil Fawlty shows a softer (however in no way sentimental) side of himself, especially in the first two episodes. This does not make him less funny, in contrary, it gives his character something extra. Really great. If you only want one Fawlty Towers tape, this is the one!
