Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
A pioneering film within Animation, Musicals and Fantasy, Walt Disney's Mary Poppins is possibly one of the warmest and dearest films ever made. Based on a story by PL Travers we find Julie Andrews on fine form in her debut lead role (for which she would win the "Best Actress" Oscar). She is practically perfectly teamed with Dick Van Dyke as the lovable chimney sweep Burt, whose cockney accent is endearingly inaccurate. Along with a fine supporting cast, where even the child actors hold their own without appearing like stage school wannabes, Poppins and her crew take you on a magical ride through chalk pictures, the roof tops of London and show you that laughter is not always the best medicine (even with a spoon full of sugar) when you can't get down. In total Mary Poppins clocked up five Academy Awards including Best Song and Best Visual Effects and has made it into the staple diet of family viewing across the world.

On the DVD: Mary Poppins has certainly cleaned up a treat, restoring her to 1.85:1 widescreen glory and 5.1 Dolby digital sound--which is guaranteed to be music to your ears. The special features are "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" with the "Sing Along with the Movie" subtitles for all your favourite songs when they appear in the movie and the "I Love to Laugh" game offering Uncle Albert flying high in his parlour once more. "The Movie Magic of Mary Poppins" lets you look behind the scenes at how the magic was done and is fun, informative and easily understandable--pity the same cannot be said about the narrator. "Hollywood goes to a World Premiere" is a warm and amusing reminder about how premieres and stars used to be in 1964. The only disappointment is the lack of commentary--Dick Van Dyke would surely have offered a gem of a cockney voice-over! --Nikki Disney

5 out of 5 stars It's supercalifraglisticexpialidocious!!   August 9, 2004

In this film, the Banks family suffer from the typical problems of a family in 1910. Mr George Banks (David Thomlinson) is too wrapped up in his work at the bank to notice his children, Jane and Michael, who always seems to be in trouble. He thinks that his life is perfect and at one. Then Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) shows up and proves him wrong.
From jumping through chalk pavement pictures to bringing life to the Banks household, Mary Poppins is the best nanny.
The animated sequence is pure Disney (I like the cute Irish fox, myself.) The penguin dance is particularly memorable.
And you'll be all over the ceiling as you laugh with funny Uncle Albert (Ed Wyn)!
Julie Andrews is brilliant as Mary Poppins. She has a great voice and some of the musical numbers are quite moving.
Now, there have been many criticisms about Mr Van Dyke's attempt at cockney, but I'd suggest not to take it too seriously. Compared to some people I've heard, his is a noble attempt.
Taken altogether, this classic Disney is little more than just a children's movie. It's a film for the family and one of Disney's best live-action flicks!

This film is excellent for people of all ages.
Its great fun and a great piece of Disney magic. You even get the choice if singing along with all of the songs. Once again great fun and the best story ever.

5 out of 5 stars "Practically perfect in every way!"   October 6, 2003

This is fantastic for viewers of any age - even better for the younger ones because they won't notice Dick Van Dyke's atrocious cockney accent!

Just sit back and relive your youth - those rainy days when you found yourself in front of the TV popping through a chalk picture, laughing uncontrollably and floating up to the ceiling or dreaming that you could just snap your fingers and your toys would up and march into the toy chest themselves!

Wondrous, magical and like I said before - and to quote Mary Poppins herself - "Practically perfect in every way!"

Bought Mary Poppins for my kids aged 14,10,4 and relished viewing it again with them. The 4 year old is the one who keeps watching it over and over but all of them sing the songs.
Don;t miss it.

"supercalifragilisticexpealidosious" what else can be said about this movie. Walt Disney at its best. Even comparing to animation today, movies today miss the "supercalifragilisticexpealidosious" characteristic of this movie. it generates warmth to all who watch it. it also causes a smile to appear on the face of whomever is reminded of its essence.
