Amazon.co.uk Review
Nominated for an Academy Award in 1990, the first short-film adventure of Wallace & Gromit was this 24-minute comedy, created by clay animator Nick Park over a six-year period at the National Film & Television School in London, and at the Aardman Animation studios that Park boosted to international acclaim. In their debut adventure, Wallace and his furry pal Gromit find themselves desperate for "a nice bit of Gorgonzola" but their refrigerator's empty and the local cheese shop is closed for a holiday! Undeterred, Wallace comes up with an extreme solution to the cheese shortage: since the moon is made of cheese (we all know that's true, right?), he decides to build a rocket ship and blast off for a cheesy lunar picnic! Gromit's only too happy to help, and before long the inventive duo is on the moon, where they encounter a clever appliance that's part oven, part robot, part lunar skiing enthusiast ... well, you just have to see the movie to understand how any of this whimsical lunar-cy can make any sense! It's a grand tale of wonderful discoveries, fantastic inventions--and really great cheese! --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The best day out.. EVER!!! ... With cheeese!   November 4, 2004
In the original escape of the three Wallace and Gromit epics, and in TJ's opinion possibly one of the best, we are introduced to their cheese fettish, and the marvals of plastacine space travel. Their (some might say) novice attempt at creating a rocket, can be viewed as a metaphor for male anatomy, and the life it creates thereafter. The emphasis on exploration is juxtaposed in a humorous setting through the personification of 'Gromit' - the dog, as he is given human characteristics and is genis behind the operation, although it is expected that 'Wallace' - the human would provide this, demonstrating the human flaw of always perceiving ourselves as the superiour species. The crimes and misdemeaners of Wallace and Gromit planning to steal the biggest souce of cheese the universe has ever known act, ironically provides a positive message for children as they are punished for this greed, noticably one of the seven deadly sins. The happy resolution is a typical convention of the childrens' genre as the characters return to their home planet with what they left for. Thoroughly enjoyable, a classic in plastacine animation!!

5 out of 5 stars British animations best creation   October 19, 2002

Wallace & Gromit's first outing in the 'Grand Day Out' is in my opinion their best.

Wallace is a single man who has a love for cheese, and has a smart dog called Gromit.

Well in this episode Wallace runs out of cheese while looking through travel brochures with Gromit, while looking for a holiday.
So where would be the best place to find cheese?-you guessed it, the moon.

Wallace builds a space craft to fly off to the moon in search of cheese, but many surprises come their way when they arrive...

Wallace & Gromit is well created, smartly put together and is excellent family fun to watch this animated comedy.

5 out of 5 stars One to watch over and over again!   August 13, 2000
This is simply brilliant animation which kids and adults alike just love. Fully of subtlety and a really good storyline. If anything is better it can only be the other two Wallace and Gromit animations - "A Close Shave" and "The Wrong Trousers". Watch any of these and you'll be hooked for life!
