Another classic March 5, 2003 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
You know that a Cracker story is going to be something special when it is written by Jimmy McGovern. McGovern has the very impressive ability to write about sensitive issues realistically and sometimes shockingly without making the rest of the story lose its charm. This is mainly achieved through use of humour (which is why Robbie Coltrane was always the perfect choice for the role of Fitz). "One Day a Lemming Will Fly" is he third story in the Cracker series, and, while perhaps not the most hard-hitting of all the episodes by McGovern, it still drags you in and leaves a deep impression of you. The story centres around the mysterious death of 14 year old Timothy Lang, a shy, introspective and gay boy who is found hanging in the woods with his trousers around his ankles. The police begin to suspect Lang's English teacher, Cassidy (Christopher Fulford), and call in Fitz to crack him. Issues explored in this story are guilt (seemingly a favourite for McGovern), mob violence, homosexuality and homophobia. There are many classic scenes, most of them involving Fitz's interrogation of Cassidy. However, another scene worth mentioning is when Fitz suddenly turns on DS Jimmy Beck (Lorcan Cranitch) and explains the policeman's often-expressed homophobia with disturbing accuracy. The story is full of nice touches, such as Fitz's interaction with DS Jane Penhaligon (Geralidine Somerville), and, of course, the final twist in the story, which I won't reveal to you simply because it is so brilliant! Once again Robbie Coltrane dominates the proceedings, but we must remember that he would not have half so much impact without Jimmy McGovern's writing. We should be thankful for this man who is isn't afraid to confront us with what we are really like, and show us was diabolical, hypocritical creatures we are.
