Nightmare Of Eden, for a start it has a scary title.
Doctor who in the late seventies has always been dissed for being weak and slow. but here is a story to trash that theory.
Doctor Who always had a quite large amount of moral undertones to a lot of the stories, and this story is a good highlight of the moronicness of drug abuse. Doctor Who for me works best when the morals are pushed to tne forefront. and despite Tom Baker's infamous scene of "oh my arms my legs my everything" the story does not suffer as much as some reviewers have said. a great and inventive story, even if the madrels arent the best ever monster to grace Doctor who. yet another story where the story itself is well enough written to make up for weak sets and designs. engaging and actually very memorable!

The Nightmare of Eden is a really good title. So what of the story itself? Will it suffer from the same as its predecessor and be brought down by awful monsters and horrific non-Leeson K9 dialogue? The answer, thank goodness, is a resounding no. The plot is great - showing off a level of imagination unseen in present day sci-fi programmes. K9 is now tolerable as when he speaks its only one or two words. The monsters - the Mandrels- are excellent creatures, looking cheesy but scary at the same time. The Doctor is as hilarious and inventive as ever, and the supporting characters all play their various parts in the story with enthusiasm and believability. The allegory of this story is drug-smuggling and therefore has even more footing in believabiity than the pure sci-fi elements of many other stories. Altogether a fantastic piece that doesn't approach the mantle of 'a classic' but is definitely one of my favourites.

A cosmic collission in deep space unleashes flesh-eating swamp creatures who begin savaging the crews of the two ships involved. Arriving in this chaos, the Doc is drawn into the drug smuggling aboard the Empress while Romana looks into the dubious activities of shady scientist Tryst...Not one for haters of season 17, Nightmare Of Eden roars along with the subtlety of a Mechanoid in a glass factory, but at least earns laughs through the sheer badness of the whole affair. Tom Baker goofs his way through the proceedings, while Lalla Ward tries to draw attention away from David Brierley's terrrible delivery of K9's dialogue. It's still fun though, especially when Fisk + friends arrive. Expect fun and a few laughs! James
