5 out of 5 stars A Good Example Of The Brilliance Of The Programme   February 6, 2008

Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones were 2 comedians who first met when joining the "Cambridge Footlights", their material somehow worked so well together that they formed. When "Not The Nine O'Clock News" first started the BBC told Mel Smith if he wanted to join the sketch show, Jones was left to do one lined parts in the programme. After much criticism the BBC gave "Not The Nine O'Clock News" a second series but without Chris Langham, who was to be replaced by Griff Rhys Jones.
The partnership worked easily over the years and when "NTNOCN" came to an end in 1982 Atkinson and Stephenson went their directions, but Smith & Jones had another idea. After an argue with the BBC, it was decided that a pilot for Smith & Jones should go ahead, greatfuly it was successful and a contract for four series was handed to the 2 comedians.
"Alas Smith & Jones" started in early 1984 and prooved to be succesful, out of the four series this video shows the best sketches from the programme. I have the original episodes and I can say to the reader that I'm satisfied that these are the best sketches of the programme. Which is quite surprising for the BBC, they usually have a lack when making compilations.
One of the funniest sketches appears at the begining where Griff appears late for the show with the word bondage in mind!

It's amazing to think that these two were part of the excellent 'Not the Nine O'Clock News' team. As soon as they went solo they seemed to perfect the art of being totally unfunny. Dreadful.
