Superb virtuoso ballet, quintessentially English June 11, 2007

I've read somewhere on the web that this ballet has been described as sort of a celebration of Englishness, and even as a yank, I can't help feeling the same when I watch it. And I never tire of watching it. The dancing is not only precise and virtuosic, but there is superb mime acting and characterization in this production, and by the end of the performance you can't help feeling that you know, and like, these people. A lot of the characterization and flavor of the piece comes from the choreography and staging, like for instance in the park scene, how the grave dignity of the Salvation Army people are conveyed by their movements and attitudes. I waited YEARS for this thing to be issued on DVD, and it is precisely for this sort of release, which has only been issued in a PAL region, that I got a player that plays both PAL and NTSC formats. If you can play it, do get it, you won't be disappointed. It should never be out of print.
